Santa Clara County is home to over 90,000 Filipinos, many of whom maintain a strong connection to their families back in the Philippines. Recently, President Duterte’s militarized response to COVID-19 and the fast-tracked passage of the Anti-Terror Law in the Philippines has both alarmed the international community and galvanized our local Filipino community into action.

In response to the egregious human rights violations happening in the Philippines, student groups and community organizations in Santa Clara County have thrown their support to the Philippine Human Rights Act (H.R. 8313), which calls on the suspension of U.S. military aid to the Philippines until military and police forces are held accountable for human rights violations. Rep. Ro Khanna (D-17) and Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-19) are both original co-sponsors of the bill.

We invite the larger community to learn more about the human rights situation in the Philippines and how county-wide support of the Philippine Human Rights Act ensures that our tax dollars will no longer fund violence against the Filipino people.
