5 Questions About COVID Vaccines and a Reality Check
November 5, 2020
David Lubarsky, CEO, UC Davis Health and Vice Chancellor for Human Health Sciences, UC Davis
How Many Vaccines Are In Development?
More than 150 coronavirus vaccines are in development across the world – and hopes are high one will come to market in the next few months. After COVID-19 cases began emerging worldwide in early 2020, work began on deciphering the SARS-CoV-2 genome. But, once a vaccine is approved by the FDA, that’s not the end – it will still take several months to get enough people vaccinated to make a difference.

Heads Up! A Call to Action to Stay Safe Over the Holidays

I hope this finds you well.
California reached an unfortunate milestone this week as we recorded our one millionth case of COVID-19. In Santa Clara County, our positivity rate has climbed above 2% and our health officer, Dr. Sara Cody, has closed indoor dining effective on November 17 in anticipation of our returning to the state's Red Tier.
Today, the State of California issued a travel advisory urging visitors and Californians returning from out-of-state to self-quarantine for 14 days after entering the state in order to slow the spread of the virus. You can read the advisory here.
All of this is happening as we are heading into the heart of the holiday season. We know that beginning with Memorial Day we always see an increase in cases after major holidays. That is what makes the next few weeks so critical. These case numbers are going in the wrong direction, but they are not just numbers. Each new case is someone, a mother, a grandfather, a neighbor or coworker getting sick, going to the hospital, or in far too many cases dying.
That means we all have to dig in and double down on our efforts to fight this pandemic. We all know that wearing a proper mask at all times when in public, maintaining social distancing of at least six feet, and limiting indoor contact with people outside of our household are the best ways to limit the spread of this deadly virus.
This is a call to action for all of us. I know a lot of us feel like we have done everything we can. Now, we need to do a little more.
Those in our community who have been slacking a little, not wearing a mask or practicing social distancing all the time, we need you to step up now. If we all pull together in the coming weeks then classrooms will be able to open as scheduled in January and we can enter 2021 as healthy as possible.
