At AdvancED, we walk our talk. We support the organizations that fight for the rights of all human beings, Mother Earth, and the connection that exists between all living things.

We advocate all day, every day, so that the work we do with organizations and communities doesn't stale at the start when good ideas are finally getting heard and strategies are getting tested. We advocate so that dollars, attention, and intention stay focused on the issues that lead to the greatest good, with specific focus on our most impacted communities.

Measures I and J

San Jose – Evergreen Community College District Board of Trustees unanimously placed Measure I—the Career Training, Student Services and Affordability Measure—and Measure J—the College Transfer, Classroom Repair and Safety Measure—on the November 2020 ballot. If enacted, these measures will allow the District to maintain excellent, affordable education through the economic recovery.

Prop 15

Prop 15 is a fair and balanced reform that:
  1. Closes property tax loopholes benefiting wealthy corporations.
  2. Cuts small business taxes.
  3. Reclaims billions every year to invest in our schools and local communities.
  4. Exempts homeowners, renters, small businesses and agricultural land so they continue to be protected by Prop 13.
  5. Prioritizes transparency and accountability by requiring public disclosure of all new revenues and how they are spent.

Just 10% of California’s most expensive nonresidential commercial properties account for 92% of Prop 15’s loophole-closing revenues.

Prop 16

In California, we believe in giving everyone, regardless of race or gender, an equal shot at fair wages, good jobs, and quality schools. But we’re not there yet. Women and people of color still face discrimination in hiring, employment, contracting, and education.
California is one of only nine states that bans affirmative action as a tool to fight discrimination. Proposition 16 is our chance to change that by ending the ban and expanding opportunity for all.

SB 860

Improving FAFSA Completion for Foster Youth

SB 860 would improve FAFSA completion by foster youth and increase access to financial aid by:

  • Clarifying that the role of FYSCPs to ensure that foster youth have access to programs that support their matriculation needs includes coordination of efforts to support FAFSA completion among high school seniors in foster care.
  • Adding FAFSA completion rates to FYSCP bi-annual reporting requirements.

AB 2416

Picture
Improving FAFSA Completion for Foster Youth

Nineteen percent of students at community colleges and eleven percent of California State University students experience homelessness, and African American students, Native American students, gay/lesbian students, and foster youth are disproportionately impacted by the homelessness crisis.

AB 2416 will make it easier for college students who have experienced homelessness to remain enrolled, by requiring that colleges consider homelessness as an extenuating circumstance when evaluating appeals for the loss of financial aid.

Community Colleges: Support Services for Foster Youth

SB 958 will allow greater access to higher education for current and former foster youth by strengthening NextUp, an existing program for foster youth attending California’s community colleges.

NextUp provides a comprehensive array of services to promote college retention and degree attainment.
SB 958 will make common sense changes to address barriers, including modifying eligibility, creating flexibility around income requirements, and more.

Eviction Moratorium

Picture
In light of the recent outbreak of the highly contagious Coronavirus disease within California, the potential economic toll of the pandemic, and requests by public officials, employers, and universities for employees to work from home we ask that you immediately docket an emergency ordinance that would provide a moratorium on all rental increases, evictions and foreclosures within District 19.

Therefore, we urge you to immediately docket emergency ordinance that would provide a moratorium on all rental increases, evictions and foreclosures in
District 19 until public health professionals have determined that the Coronavirus outbreak has been contained.

AB 2880

Picture
Preventing Homelessness among Foster Youth in California

A
B 2880, authored by Assemblymember Phil Ting, would prevent California’s foster care system from contributing to the growing homelessness crisis by establishing a THP-NMD Housing Supplement.

AB 2880 would establish a supplement amount for both parenting youth and youth who are not parents, based each county’s Fair Market Rent (FMR), a system set and used by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Thus, supplement amounts would adjust annually, responsive to changes in the housing market.

Philippine Human Rights Act (PHRA)

Picture
As a coalition of Filipino and Asian Pacific Islander organizations, we are calling for the Asian Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus members to denounce the recently passed Anti-Terror Bill in the Philippines and pass a resolution in support of the Philippine Human Rights Act.

As the COVID-19 pandemic has ravaged our community as well as the ongoing systemic racial violence, we see the Philippine Human Rights Act as a way to divest from arms sales that lead to mass human rights violations towards our loved ones, and instead, invest in governmental assistance and basic services for Black, Indigenous, and immigrant communities needed during this difficult time, such as PPEs, hazard pay, unemployment assistance, and COVID-19 testing.
